Welcome to Badger Breakaway
The newest home for independent coverage of the Wisconsin Badgers basketball and hockey teams–nearly a decade in the making
On a cold Winter day in Madison, Wisconsin, I sat inside my disgustingly cheap apartment on Langdon Street. While I ignored the required readings for Poli Sci 408, assignments for Econ 301, and my overall mental well-being, I was fixated on one question:
When will Mellissa Channell return from her knee injury?
The actual answer to that question was beside the point. A young college student who had attended 22 Wisconsin Badgers games in his first semester at the University of Wisconsin had an insatiable need for more coverage of his alma mater-to-be.
Fast-forward nearly a decade and a career change later, and that fixation has not wavered. Not on the status of now two-time PWHL champion Mellissa Channell(-Watkins!), but on giving you UW alumni, students, and fans a look inside the teams you cannot get enough of.
Badger Breakaway is your dedicated stop for coverage of the Wisconsin Badgers basketball and hockey teams. In my three years covering Wisconsin athletics in various capacities, I have consistently been brought back to the greater Kohl Center complex. Now, I am bringing you with me.
A freezing cold day at Wrigley Field to cover the Wisconsin hockey teams, Big Ten basketball media days, heck, even flying between Denver and Minneapolis to cover the NCAA Basketball Tournament and a women’s hockey national championship in the same weekend–these are not just privileges, but my responsibility to you, the fan.
So, if you’ve been here since the ‘Sconnie Six Pack days, thank you. If you’re joining us now, welcome aboard! Never before have I been so blessed with the opportunity in front of me to bring you tremendous content all season long.
Oh, and it all starts NOW. Even before Wisconsin’s women’s hockey media day this week, the first Badger Breakaway article is up with quotes from players and coaches across the Western Collegiate Hockey Association breaking down a significant rule change in women’s college hockey this winter.
Yeah, the first person interviewed in the first story of the re-launch is the Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach. I guess we are all just gonna have to deal with that forever. If you can forgive me for that sin, stick around for everything from media days to March Madness.
The Big Ten basketball schedule is coming soon (maybe this week?). We will preview every team in the WCHA before the puck drops next Friday. I know you won’t want to miss what we have cooking up for Big Ten basketball media days with every program in the Big Ten.
So subscribe, bookmark, share, do all the things here at Badger Breakaway. I promise, you won’t regret it.
