Postgame Pulse: Wisconsin women's hockey suffers blowout loss
Head coach Mark Johnson spoke following the first Wisconsin women's hockey loss in nearly a year
A handful of program-best records came to an end Friday night as the top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team was upset 5-1 by the No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Wisconsin Badgers had not lost a game in 36 tries, won their last 23, and had taken ten-straight over their Border Battle rival, but those marks atop the recordbook will stop there.
The Badgers (10-1-0, 6-1-0 WCHA) have little time to reflect on the end of that unprecedented run of success, as they turn around today for a 2:00 p.m. puck drop against those same Gophers (10-1-0, 6-1-0 WCHA). That quick turnaround is something UW head coach is hoping to use as an advantage for his team.
“If you’re a competitive team or a competitive coach or competitive players, you know, the sooner you get back at it, the better,” the winningest coach in the history of NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey remarked. “And so, two o’clock is gonna come quick. The [Gophers] are going to come out with a little bit of jam in their game. They’re going to be confident and excited. And how are we going to respond to that? So, you know, the first ten minutes tomorrow is going to indicate, you know, what we want to do.”
