Postgame Pulse: Wisconsin hockey sweeps Border Battle double-header
Both Wisconsin Badgers hockey teams defeated their Minnesota Golden Gophers counterparts on Saturday for a day to remember in Madison
Madison, WI - The rare double Border Battle delivered a Saturday Wisconsin Badgers hockey fans will not soon forget. In back-to-back games inside LaBahn Arena and the Kohl Center, Wisconsin bested Minnesota in both women’s and men’s hockey, capping a historic weekend.
Wisconsin women’s hockey did not start on the right side of history on Friday, losing for the first time in 37 games, and to the Gophers for the first time in eleven tries, both program records. Head coach Mark Johnson’s squad bounced back on Saturday, avoiding being swept at home by Minnesota for the first time since 2014.
Johnson, forward Kirsten Simms, and captain Caroline Harvey spoke to the media following Wisconsin’s 7-2 victory over Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
Afterward, Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey did make some first-since-2014 history. For the first time in 11 years, the Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey team left Madison winless, as a 4-0 Wisconsin victory capped off the first time the Badgers, on home ice, swept the Gophers in over a decade.
“It’s huge, I think, uh, just starting on the right path. Obviously it feels really good,” UW forward Quinn Finley said in a post-game press conference. “Kind of what coach says, just kind of stick to our business and stick to the dailies and just keep going on to the next weekend.”
Hear from Wisconsin men’s hockey head coach Mike Hastings, Finley, and Badgers forward Bruno Montgomery following the win. Finley and Montgomery each scored a pair of goals in the sweep-clinching victory.
