I am with you on KK. Abbey Murphy would in the conversation if she could just stop being Abbey Murphy in th penalty box. Dunne is hisorically a terrifying member of a terrifying hockey family. I am super interested in hearing what you thought of the announcers on Friday and their descriptions of McNaughton. Ava is our person, so I take her for granted. Like I did with Soupy and Kronish, while I could not have been more impressed by Emma Soderberg or Regean Kirk. A reverse homerism maybe.
Murphy and Dunne were the two others I put genuine thought into as I chose my words to describe Harvey's current standing in the race. Ultimately, if Harvey is at pace with (let alone outperforming) the offensive production those two provide, KK doing that from the blue line makes it more impressive. Yes, Dunne and Murphy are going to score more goals, but a considerable number of Harvey's assists are because of redirections of her shots from the point. She's not just a beneficiary of having goal-scorers around her.
It's always a little tricky to tease out the quality of UW's goaltenders because they 1. don't face a ton of shots 2. often when they do face shots, they are off turnovers and are high-quality opportunities. I thought last week's game against Stonehill was a perfect example of this. Rhyah Stewart gets two goals counted against her, but they came as result of 1. a turnover on a breakout 2. a bad line change leading to point-blank shots. All that is a long-winded way to say, yes, I thought the praise of McNaughton was warranted. She performed exceptionally in Friday's game, doing all you could ask of her and then some. The difference between the rookie and the junior right now is that McNaughton stops those point-blank scoring chances more often than not.
Exactly. I think KK over her career….we met her as a 17 year old kid at the Olympics….has more than merited a Patty Kaz. She has been in an Era of killers, and I understand it. But, this feels like a break out year, if this run continues for both her and the team, this should be her year. I mean, Obrien made sense last year, and so would Simms or Laila. I thought Watts should have got a second one based on total points in a season. But, to be fair, I thought Soupy and Kronish should have got it for the run to the Natty.
I secretly really like Abbey Murphy. She was nice to us when we met at Ridder. I think, like Brita Curl, she has and has earned the rep of being a killer. And the hit on KK was unforgiveable. But, like KK, she has a career that has earned the Patty Kaz and like KK she has existed in a time of killers.
Dunne is a different thing all together. Hers is an almost workman like thing, where she is just simply better, not flashy, in all the areas. Like Chris Mullin in hoops. No one is going ot make a high light reel of her stuff, but if you know what you are looking at, you know how good she is. She is sort of the opposite of Laila. I know for certain how good Laila is, but I have no idea how she does what she does to make me think that. Laila is like magic, and Dunne is lunch pail awesome.
I think we have been blessed with McNaughton, and Soupy, and Kronish and Jane Gervais and Quinn Kuntz. The goalie thing at Labahn is under appreciated for sure. Might be a fun longer feature to take on.
